Abstract

<PICT:0683516/IV (b)/1> <PICT:0683516/IV (b)/2> In the synthesis of hydrocarbons from carbon monoxide and hydrogen, the liberated heat of reaction is removed indirectly by an evaporating cooling medium which comprises a mixture of two or more organic liquid constituents having different boiling points, the boiling range of the medium being substantially greater than and including the necessary range of reaction temperature, so that the reaction temperature increases in the direction of gas flow, i.e. from top to bottom of the reactor. The process may be effected in multitubular or multiplate type reactors (Figs. 1 and 4 respectively). Rectification is effected in the cooling medium chamber 1 (Fig. 1) or cooling tubes 23 (Fig. 4), and sieve trays 5 (Fig. 1) or 27 (Fig. 4), or alternatively bubble plates and caps, or packing such as rings, spirals and balls, may be provided for the purpose. The lower boiling constituent vapours of the cooling medium are withdrawn overhead, condensed in an indirect steam generator 9 (Fig. 1) or 30 (Fig. 4) and returned to the top of the cooling chamber or cooling tubes. The cooling medium preferably comprises mixtures of saturated hydrocarbons or hydrocarbon compounds such as paraffins, diphenyl and glycerine.ALSO:<PICT:0683516/III/1> In exothermic catalytic gaseous reactions, particularly the hydrogenation of carbon monoxide, in which the liberated heat is removed indirectly by an evaporating cooling medium, the cooling medium comprises a mixture of two or more organic liquid constitutents having different boiling points, the boiling range of the medium being substantially greater than and including the necessary range of reaction temperature, so that the reaction temperature increases in the direction of gas flow, i.e. from top p to bottom of the reactor. The process may be effected in multitubular or multiplate type reactors, Figs. 1 and 4 respectively, Rectification is effected in the cooling medium chamber 1, Fig. 1, or cooling tubes 23, Fig. 4, and sieve trays 5, Fig. 1, or 27, Fig. 4, or alternatively bubble plates and caps, or packing such as rings, spirals and balls, may be provided for the purpose.
