Abstract

<FORM:0845401/III/1> In a process for the production of gases consisting mainly of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, a carbonaceous material is reacted at a high temperature, e.g. 1200 DEG C., with steam in the presence of oxygen to maintain the reaction temperature and a hydrocarbon in the form of a gas or vapour is reacted at a lower temperature, e.g. 800 DEG -900 DEG C., with steam in the presence of a catalyst, the heat required to maintain the catalytic reaction being supplied by passing the hot gases from the high temperature reaction through a zone arranged in heat exchange relationship with the zone in which the catalytic reaction is carried out. The gaseous products of the process may be led away as two separate streams or they may be mixed together. The hydrocarbon for the catalytic reaction may be methane or a methane-rich gas or liquid hydrocarbons of low molecular weight. The carbonaceous material may be coal or coke or a hydrocarbon such as crude petroleum, a heavy distillate from petroleum or a tar or a gaseous or liquid hydrocarbon similar to that used in the catalytic reaction. The temperature of the hot gases may be reduced before they reach the heat exchange zone, e.g. by adding gas leaving the catalytic reaction zone. In the apparatus shown crude petroleum, oxygen and steam are reacted in a chamber 1 at about 1200 DEG C. The hot gases from the chamber 1 are passed into a vessel 7 containing a bank of tubes 8, through the tubes 8 to an outlet 14. A catalytic material is arranged in the spaces surrounding the tubes 8 and a mixture of hydrocarbon and steam is admitted at 12, the products of the catalytic reaction being mixed with those from the chamber 1. Gas may be recycled by the line 15. The carbon monoxide in the gas produced may be reacted with steam to produce carbon dioxide and hydrogen and the carbon dioxide subsequently removed to yield a gas consisting mainly of hydrogen. The steam for this reaction may be introduced with the hydrocarbon in the catalytic reaction zone.
