Abstract
1414366 High methane content gas METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG 13 July 1973 [14 July 1972] 33613/73 Heading C5E A gas having a high methane and low hydrogen content and which is interchangeable with natural gas is produced by reacting evaporable hydrocarbons in a rich gas reactor with water vapour on a nickelcontaining catalyst at a temperature of 350‹ to 600‹ C. and under elevated pressure to produce a rich gas primary product, the hydrocarbons and the water vapour being fed to the reaction in a mixture with a first partial stream of product gas from which substantially all carbon dioxide has been removed and which contains at least 90% by volume of methane on a dry basis. The rich gas primary product of the reaction is cooled by being sprinkled with water in a cooler, the carbon dioxide is scrubbed out in an absorber, and the water which has been heated in cooling the rich gas primary product is directly contacted in a saturator with the first partial stream of gas from which substantially all carbon dioxide has been removed to reheat the gas and enrich it with water vapour; the reheated enriched first partial stream is then passed to the inlet of the rich gas reactor. A second partial stream is branched from the cycle between the carbon dioxide absorber and the saturator. The second partial stream may be passed through a methanization stage. Part of the rich gas primary product may be added to the second partial stream prior to methanization. The ratio by volume of second to first partial stream is from 0À6 to 1À2 : 1. 0À5 to 0À8 kg. live stream is used per kg. hydrocarbon to be reacted.
