Abstract
1469140 High methane content gas METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG 1 Aug 1974 [16 Aug 1973] 34078/74 Heading C5E A gas of high methane content is produced by cracking methanol vapour in one or more stages at a pressure greater than atmospheric pressure, e.g. 5 to 100 kg./sq.cm. (absolute), and at an elevated temperature, e.g. 250‹ to 550‹ C. in contact with a methanol-cracking catalyst in the presence of steam, the weight ratio of steam to methanol in the gas mixture in contact with the catalyst being at least 0À7 : 1, and in the presence of a methane-containing gas having a higher methane concentration than a gas produced by the cracking of methanol alone, the product gas from the cracking is catalytically methanized in at least one methanization stage and part of the methanized gas is added to the feedstock to be converted as the methane-containing gas. The methane-containing gas may contain 75 to 100% by volume of methane. The weight ratio of fresh steam added from outside the system to methanol is below 4 : 1. The methanol-cracking catalyst may contain 25 to 75% by wt. of nickel; the maximum particle size of the nickel in the fresh catalyst is 300 Angstroms and the most frequent particle size is in the range 50 to 150 Angstroms; the fresh catalyst has a hydrogen absorption above 3 ml./gm. The gas produced by cracking methanol is passed through at least one methanization stage and then through a carbon dioxide scrubber, and a partial stream of the methanized gas which is substantially free of carbon dioxide is recycled to the methanol-cracking stage as the methane-containing gas. Alternatively, the methanized gas is passed through a cooler where it is directly contacted with trickling cold water to cool the gas and condense some of its water vapour, whereafter carbon dioxide is scrubbed out of the cooled gas, and a partial stream of the treated gas is saturated with water vapour by being directly contacted with water and condensate withdrawn from a sump of the cooler and is recycled to the methanol-cracking stage as the methane-containing gas.
