Abstract

A modification of the process described in the parent Specification for the conversion of hydrocarbons having at least one olefinic double bond into oxygen-containing derivatives, such as aldehydes and alcohols, by the action of a gas containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a filling mass provided with cobalt or a cobalt compound and packed in the reaction space, in which a gas-containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen is first passed through a mass containing cobalt or a cobalt compound in a preliminary oven, under conditions which promote the formation of volatile cobalt compounds containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen, wherein the pressure used in the preliminary area is appreciably lower than the pressure to be used in the oxo reaction and does not exceed 75 atmos. The gas may contain hydrocarbons including the olefinic reactant. The low pressure prevents heating due to a preliminary oxo reaction and a catalyst of constant composition is obtained. Thus, when the olefines are present a solution of catalyst is obtained which is stable if air is excluded and if under adequate carbon monoxide tension, e.g. 1-3 atmos. and at 50 DEG C. at least 1 atmos. Temperatures of operation indicated are 50-90 DEG C., especially 60-80 DEG C., and particularly about 70 DEG C. The pressure should ensure a partial pressure of carbon monoxide of more than 10 atmos., e.g. 20-50 atmos. With water gas the pressure should be at least 25 atmos. Products leaving the oven are cooled and stored. The conventional decobalting zone of the oxo-synthesis may be used intermittently as the preliminary oven. In an example an apparatus used alternatively for decobalting and catalyst preparation contains pumice on which 30 per cent weight of cobalt is deposited and is fed with water gas at 70 DEG C., together with a C6-C8 olefine fraction, the pressure being approx. 25 atmos. and the product after cooling is passed to storage at 1-5 atmos. The initial cobalt content of the solution is 3 per cent approx. and when it drops to less than 0.5 per cent the process is stopped and the oven used for decobalting.
