1357502 Producing reducing gas METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG 16 Aug 1972 [20 Aug 1971] 38274/72 Heading C5E Reducing gas containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen and having a low carbon dioxide and water vapour content, is produced by reacting natural gas with water vapour, a partial amount of the natural gas being cracked in a first stage at 350‹ to 550‹ C. with at least part of the water vapour in contact with a nickel catalyst and the resulting high hydrogen-content gas being mixed with the remainder of the natural gas and, if desired further heated, prior to completing the reaction in a second stage at 975‹ to 1100‹ C. in contact with an indirectly heated nickel-containing catalyst. The reaction may be carried out under a pressure of 5 to 15 kg./sq. cm. The catalyst for the first stage may contain 10 to 50% by wt. nickel on a magnesium silicate support. The indirectly heated catalyst may be contained in a tubular reactor.
