Abstract

1,149,152. Making combustible gas. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. 20 July, 1967 [3 Sept., 1966], No. 33489/67. Heading C5E. In the preparation of a methane-rich gas, a normally liquid hydrocarbon having an upper boiling limit of 350‹ C. and containing from 6 to 30 carbon atoms per molecule is heated to 350-400‹ C. and passed, together with 1À5 to 3 kg. of steam per kg. of hydrocarbon also heated to 350-400‹ C., into a reactor in which it is cracked at below 450‹ C. using a catalyst comprising metallic cobalt or nickel on a magnesium silicate carrier, the resulting gas is cooled to 200-250‹ C., passed over a methanation catalyst and then scrubbed to reduce its carbon dioxide content to not more than 4% by volume. A suitable cracking catalyst contains 5-40% by weight of cobalt or nickel and may contain an activating addition of 0À05 to 3% by weight of platinum. The methanation catalyst may be the same as the cracking catalyst or may be a different catalyst such as an alumina carrier containing nickel. Sulphur compounds may be converted with added hydrogen in a catalytic desulphurization reaction carried out before the cracking. The cracking reaction may be carried out at a pressure of 20 atmospheres gauge or at normal pressure.
