Abstract

1458666 Methane-rich gas SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 15 March 1974 [19 March 1973] 13114/73 Heading C5E A process for preparing a methane-rich gas comprises the steps of (a) partial combusting a fuel, e.g. fuel oil, with an oxygen-containing gas, (b) injecting a cool hydrogen-containing gas into the hot gas produced, and (c) injecting a normally-liquid hydrocarbon fraction into the cooled gas in a carburetter. Step (b) can be carried out using a volume ratio of cool gas to hot gas between 1 : 10 and 5 : 1 to cool the hot gas to 650-1100‹ C. so that cracking of the injected hydrocarbon fraction either to olefins or to hydrogen and carbon is substantially avoided. The cool hydrogen-containing gas can be prepared by cooling a portion of the hot gas, e.g. to 175-600‹ C., and subjecting it to a catalytic CO-shift reaction followed by removal of CO 2 , alternatively extraneous sources of hydrogen, such as water gas, producer gas, tail gas or refinery gas can be used. A small amount of steam can also be injected into the hot gas. The hydrocarbon fraction injected in step (c) can be gasoline, kerosine or other distillate boiling below 350‹ C. The product from step (c), which in the example contains 23 volume per cent H 2 , 49% CH 4 , 25À6% CO and 2À4% CO 2 +N 2 + aromatics, can be subjected to catalytic methanation.
