Abstract

1,188,395. Ammonia synthesis gas. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. 6 Dec., 1967 [7 Dec., 1966], No. 55488/67. Heading C1A. Ammonia synthesis gas is prepared from a gas containing CO, CH 4 and H 2 mixed with a cooled flue or cracked gas which is rich in nitrogen, in proportions so that the converted gas will contain N 2 and H 2 in the correct ratio for ammonia synthesis. The mixture is cooled in a conventional regenerative system of cold storage masses to condense solid methane out. Oxygen is then removed from the methane-free gas by catalytic combustion with some of the hydrogen in the gas and then the gas is enriched with hydrogen by converting the CO with steam. The product is washed to remove CO 2 and hydrogenated to convert residual CO 2 and CO to methane. The synthesis gas may contain 1-1À3% of inert constituents. The gas containing CO, CH 4 and H 2 may be coke oven gas, refinery exhaust gas or a cracked gas. The gas rich in N 2 may be a gas cracked with air, e.g. coke oven gas, residual gas, or refinery exhaust gas and the cracking may be effected at a pressure great enough to allow the gas to be mixed with the gas mixture before cooling and some of the cracked or flue gas may be added to the gas mixture after cooling. The cracked gas or flue gas may be cooled and washed with water before being mixed with the coke oven gas.
