Abstract

Coke oven gas consisting mainly of a H2/CO mixt., is enriched in CO obtained by passing CO2, opt. mixed with O2 over a bed of incandescent coke, before conversion to synthesis gas, e.g. by methanisation. Compsn. of the coke oven gas, contg. around 60% H2 a and 10% CO, is adjusted to the optimum H2/CO ratio for methanisation, e.g. 3:1, by a simple process, using equipment available in coking plants. By passing CO2 over coke discharged from the coke oven, this is simultaneously cooled by the strongly endothermic reaction.
