Abstract
1522994 Shift conversion process BRITISH GAS CORP 15 Sept 1976 [18 Sept 1975] 38407/75 Heading C5E CO-shift converted gases, suitable for direct methanation to substitute natural gas are prepared by introducing a synthesis gas having a CO content of at least 45% volume (dry basis) into a quench vessel to separate tarry liquors therefrom and to produce a first quenched gas having a steam/gas volume ratio of not more than 0.4:1, effecting a first shift reaction upon at least a portion of the quenched gas at a temperature of not greater than 550‹ C. to produce, after admixture with any remaining portion of the quenched gas, a first shifted gas having a CO content of not more than 45% volume, subjecting the first shifted gas to a second shift reaction at a temperature of not greater than 550‹ C. to produce a second shifted gas, and cooling the second shifted gas to separate oily liquors therefrom, the aqueous components of the tarry and oily liquors separated at the quenching and cooling stages being employed as the quenching medium for the quenching. At least part of the first shifted gas may be subjected to a second quench with the aqueous components. The first quenched gas may be divided into two streams, the first stream being subjected to a second quench, subjected to a shift reaction and then combined with the second stream to form the first shifted gas. Steam may be added to the first shift gas prior to the second shift reaction.
