Abstract
1344961 Scrubbing coke oven gas KOPPERS CO Inc 28 June 1972 [18 Aug 1971] 30358/72 Heading C5E NH 3 is removed from coke-oven gas by (a) contacting it with a flushing liquor to remove some of the ammonia present and to form a crude NH 3 liquor containing free and fixed NH 3 , (b) contacting the coke oven gas from (a) with a scrubbing liquor obtained from stage (c) below to remove the remainder of the NH 3 and to form a weak NH 3 liquor containing free NH 3 , (c) stripping the free NH 3 preferably with steam from the weak NH 3 liquor to obtain a scrubbing liquor for stage (b). The flushing liquor is preferably crude NH 3 liquor. The weak and crude NH 3 liquors from stages (a) and (b) are combined, the NH 3 stripped therefrom, and a part of the stripped mixture is used for scrubbing liquor in stage (b), the remainder being treated with lime to convert fixed NH 3 to free NH 3 which is consequently stripped therefrom. The coke oven gas from stage (a) is treated to remove naphthalene and tar prior to contact with the scrubbing liquor.
