Abstract

885,673. Purifying gas; treating ammoniacal liquor. KOPPERS CO. Inc. July 13, 1959 [Aug. 18, 1958], No. 23966/59. Drawings to Specification. Class 55 (2). In a process for treating crude coal distillation gas the gas is first cooled to condense tar and aqueous condensate before being de-tarred in an electrostatic precipitator and the de-tarred gas is then washed first with a wash oil to remove naphthalene and then with water to remove ammonia, the ammonia containing liquor being passed to a still where it is stripped of free ammonia which is burnt in the presence of air and steam under temperature and heat evolving conditions precluding the formation of oxides of nitrogen and the combustion products discharged to atmosphere. The wash oil for removing naphthalene may be a petroleum oil boiling between 300‹ and 378‹ C. or a tar distillate boiling between 200‹ and 400‹ C. Hydrogen sulphide and cyanide in the gas absorbed in the washing to remove ammonia are also removed from the liquor and burnt together with the ammonia. To increase the amount of hydrogen sulphide and cyanide removed by washing the gas with water, the liquor therefrom may be treated in two stages, in the first a portion of the free ammonia and all the absorbed hydrogen sulphide and cyanide are removed and burnt and in the second the remaining ammonia is removed and returned to the step in which the gas is washed with water. In the burning of the ammonia the water vapour to ammonia ratio ranges between 3.7: 1 to 1: 1 and the temperature of the vapours supplied to the chamber in which the ammonia is burnt is maintained in excess of 70‹ C. to prevent formation of ammonium carbonate. The temperature in the combustion chamber is maintained between 760‹ and 980 ‹ C. and the residence time of the gases in the combustion chamber such that there is a heat release of between 20,000 and 130,000 B.Th.U per hour per cubic foot of combustion volume.
