Abstract

957,120. Distilling water. E. A. J. MROZ. Dec. 29, 1961 [Jan. 5, 1961], No. 46598/61. Heading BIB. In a process for the distillation of liquor containing dissolved solids which form scale on heating surfaces, e.g. sea water or industrial waste water, a stream of the liquor is contacted with hot gas, and the mixture of gas and vapour so produced is brought into contact with a further stream of the liquor in order to condense the vapour and thereby obtain a warm diluted liquor which is suitable for distillation without excessive scale-formation. Hot gases at a pressure of 100 p.s.i. are generated by burning methane in chamber 70 with excess compressed air, supplied from compressor 74 which is driven by gas-turbine 72. The combustion gases pass through after-burner 76, where additional fuel is burned and the temperature is raised to 3000 ‹F., and are then introduced through line 20a into contactor 12a. Raw water is pumped through line 10a and spray-nozzles 14a into the top of contactor 12a, and some of the water is vaporized by the hot gases. Excess water is withdrawn via line 24a. The mixture of gas and steam leaving contactor 12a is freed from entrained water in separator 30a, and is then passed through line 34a into contactor 36a, which is supplied with sprays of water by lines 52,51a<SP>1</SP>, 52a<SP>11</SP>. If desired, the water supplied by these three lines may come from different sources, e.g. the water supplied by line 52 may be warm water from a previous contacting operation. Warm water under pressure is withdrawn via line 24a<SP>1</SP>, any precipitated solids being retained by filter 101. Gases, withdrawn from the top of contactor 36a, are passed through gas / liquid separator 30a, and are then discharged via pressure-control valve 84a.
