Abstract

829,805. Treating tar. HOLMES & CO. Ltd., W. C., COOPER, C., and CLYNE, O. May 16, 1957, No. 15528/57. Class 55 (2). Tar from a piston-type gas-holder to be treated for removal of water and light hydrocarbons is fed continuously by an inlet 18 into a vessel 11 wherein, in a portion 116 of the vessel, it is heated by pipes 14 to remove water and, in a portion 11a, is heated to a higher temperature by pipes 13 to remove light hydrocarbons. The vapours of the water and light hydrocarbons are carried off through outlet 17 by a gas blown through the tar through perforated pipes 16 and 15 and condensed in a condenser (not shown), the gas from the condenser being recirculated through the vessel 11 and treated tar withdrawn from an outlet (not shown) in the portion 11b of vessel 11. The portions 11a and 11b of the vessel 11 are separated by a weir 12 and are respectively maintained at a temperature of about 120‹ C. and just below 100‹ C.
