Abstract

Wash liquid in column is treated with a hydrophilic alcohol or ketone, pref. 0.1-1 wt.% MeOH w.r.t. wash liquid, and the solvent-contng. wash liquid is led in counter-current to the gas, in process for removing steam from pyrolysis gases by (1) cooling below 0 degree C. in the presence of MeOH and pre-drying by partial steam condensation and (2) washing at -15 to -60 degrees C. with high- or low-boiling hydrocarbons in order to separate heavy gases. Useful e.g. in cracking of benzine for acetylene prodn.
