Abstract

112,878. Thuman, F., (Evans, O. B.). April 20, 1917. Hydrocarbons, cracking.-Benzol, and its homologues, toluol, xylol, &c., are treated for the removal of impurities that are not extracted by washing with acid and alkali, by subjecting them in the absence of air to a temperature sufficient to decompose those impurities. The operation may be effected in the presence of an inert gas such as " blue " or uncarburetted water-gas or steam. In treating toluol, a temperature above 1,000‹ F., preferably 1,400‹ F., is used. The apparatus comprises an externally heated retort 4 containing a pipe or chamber 3. The hydrocarbon, entering by a pipe 1, flows through the pipe 3 and back through the retort, leaving in the form of vapour by a pipe 6.
