Abstract

In a process for recovering sulphur from hydrogen sulphide by interacting hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide in two catalyst stages using a granular catalyst in fixed beds, the first stage being carried out at a temperature of about 300 DEG C. or higher such that sulphur is produced as a vapour and the second at a lower temperature such that sulphur such that sulphur is deposited on the catalyst, sulphur being separated from the gases leaving the first stage before passing them to the second stage, the process is carried out in an apparatus comprising three catalyst chambers for the following steps: (a) the second stage reaction when sulphur is deposited on the catalyst, (b) the first stage reaction when the deposited sulphur is vaporized, and (c) cooling from the higher temperatures employed in the first stage reaction to the lower temperature employed in the second stage reaction, in a cyclic manner such that each chamber is used for all three steps in the above sequence: The hydrogen sulphide is reacted with sufficient sulphur dioxide to convert all the hydrogen sulphide being treated to sulphur and water vapour assuming complete reaction, and the ratio of hydrogen sulphide to sulphur dioxide is preferably 2 : 1 by volume. The catalyst may be alumina bauxite or bauxite promoted with iron oxide. The temperature in the second stage reaction may be maintained at 150 DEG C.
