Abstract
Acetylene is made by heating to above 1000 DEG C. under substantially atmospheric pressure, for a period less than one second, a mixture of a normally gaseous hydrocarbon other than methane with 3--9 times its volume of hydrogen; mixtures of normally gaseous hydrocarbons, including mixtures containing methane, may also be treated, and in this event the volume of hydrogen must be 3--9 times the volume of all the hydrocarbons in the mixture. The products should be rapidly cooled, and this may be effected, at least in part, by heat exchange with fresh gas mixture. Acetylene may be recovered from the products by means of a solvent such as acetone, and the residual hydrocarbons may be returned to the reaction or otherwise utilized. The process may be effected in tubes of refractory material, such as silica or carborundum tubes, which may contain solid cores. Various methods of heating the tubes are indicated. In the examples: (1) a mixture of ethylene with four times its volume of hydrogen is passed through a silica tube heated to 1300 DEG C. at such a rate that the reaction time is about 0,01 second; (2) a mixture containing methane 52, hydrogen 22, ethylene 18 and ethane 4 per cent is diluted with four times its volume of hydrogen and heated to 1460--1470 DEG C. for about 0,01 second. Specification 440,432 is referred to.
