Abstract
Ethylene and/or propylene are obtained by pyrolysis of a gas containing ethane and/or propane by mixing with steam and pyrolysing in an indirectly heated pyrolysis zone to convert at least 50% of the ethane and at least 85% of the propane, withdrawing at a temperature of at least 1500 DEG F. after not more than 1 second and cooling to below 1000 DEG F. Preferably there is added to the feed 50-1000 p.p.m. of sulphur and pyrolysis is effected in a tube of 3-6 inches outside diameter to which is applied 20,000-40,000 B.T.L.U./hr./sq. ft. Coke may be removed periodically by passing only steam through the tube at at least 1800 DEG F.
