Abstract
Tetrafluoroethylene is obtained by the pyrolysis of CHF2Cl in the presence of water vapour. The reaction may be carried out at 650-1400 DEG C. with residence times of 0.005-0.8 second, using a proportion of steam of 15-70% mol based on the reaction mixture. The process may be carried out in a slit-shaped reaction zone as described in Specification 902,682 in the added presence of steam; or in a reaction zone supplied with an oxyhydrogen flame, the heat required for the pyrolysis being derived from the super-heated steam thereby introduced into the reaction zone.
