Abstract
A flame-resistant, glass-clear solid resin is produced by halogenating cyclododecane in the absence of a catalyst in a solvent, e.g. carbon tetrachloride until the halogen content is about 6 to 15 halogen atoms per molecule of the cyclododecane, preferably 10 halogen atoms per molecule of cyclododecane. The halogen is preferably chlorine and the process carried out at a temperature between 30 and 80 DEG C. In an example cyclododecane dissolved in carbon tetrachloride is heated under reflux whilst chlorine is fed into the mixture for 30 hours after which chlorine and hydrogen chloride are blown out from the hot mixture by feeding in nitrogen and the carbon tetrachloride is distilled off. The residue is a pale yellow viscous resin having chlorine content 68.2% corresponding to 9.6 chlorine atoms per molecule.
