Abstract

Pyridine aldehydes are produced by heating a pyridine-N-oxide-carbinol to a temperature between its decomposition temperature and 450 DEG C., and recovering the pyridine aldehyde produced from the reaction mixture. Preferably the reaction is carried out continuously by continuous supply of small quantities of the starting pyridine-N-oxide-carbinol to a heated reaction zone, withdrawal and condensation of the pyridine aldehyde and water vapour produced. The pyridine-N-oxide-carbinol is desirably supplied to the reaction zone with an inert diluent such as water. The preferred temperature for carrying out the process is about 340 DEG C.
