Abstract
In a process of preparing biuret by heating urea, the biuret formation is accelerated by causing water vapour to pass through the urea melt while it is being heated. Reaction conditions are preferably 110 DEG to 160 DEG C. at 30 to 760 mm. of Hg. The water vapour current through the melt may be maintained with steam or superheated steam, by continuous addition of water or urea solution (e.g. as obtained in conventional urea synthesis) or by refluxing an aqueous urea melt. The aqueous content of the urea melt is preferably maintained at 1 to 15% by weight, a portion of the melt being continuously withdrawn and recycled after removal of biuret. U.S.A. Specifications 2,145,392, 2,370,065 and 2,524,049 are referred to.
