Abstract

814,584. Treating wood &c. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Aug. 16, 1957, No. 25968/57. Class 140. Wood or other natural or artificially formed lignocellulosic material is dimensionally stabilized by swelling and impregnation with a solution of phthalaldehydic acid or a derivative thereof substituted in the aryl group with at least one chlorine or lower alkyl group, and subsequently curing by heating in an oven or with hot vapours to between 95‹ and 160‹ C. to produce a reaction product between the acid or derivative and the lignocellulose, which remains in the material. The solution used may be of about 20-35 per cent strength and may be in water or an aqueous mixture such as a 50: 50 mixture with propylene glycol methyl ether in an organic solvent such as pyridine or dimethyl formamide which has a swelling action, or in a solvent having little swelling action such as methyl isobutyl ketone, followed by curing treatment with the hot vapour of a swelling liquid, e.g. steam. Impregnation may be effected at normal, reduced, or increased pressure, and at temperatures between 15‹ and 85‹ C. When an aqueous solution is used free water may be removed by heating in a high humidity cabinet or treating with hot inert vapours such as those of xylene or toluene, which also effect curing. The material may be pretreated with an acidic material such as sulphur dioxide which is stated to act as a catalyst and substantially reduce the curing time. Suitable derivatives of phthalaldehydic acid referred to are the 5-chloro and the 5- tertiary butyl compounds. Excess of the treating compounds are removed after curing by leaching. The Specification gives figures showing reduced shrinkage on drying of treated as compared with untreated wood.
