719,245. Treating wood. OFFICE NATIONAL D'ETUDES ET DE RECHERCHES AERONAUTIQUES (O.N.E.R.A.). April 3, 1952 [April 3, 1951; March 14, 1952], No. 8520/52. Drawings to Specification. Class 140. Wood, e.g. veneer, is reduced to its cellulosic structure by treatment with chlorine dioxide either as a gas, or by immersion in an aqueous solution of sodium chlorite containing an organic acid reacting therewith to yield chlorine dioxide, the treatment being continued until substantially all the lignin is removed, the resulting cellulosic structure being then steam treated and/or washed and dried. The product may be used as such, or may be impregnated with melamine-formaldehyde resin and hot-pressed to cure the resin and, if desired, to shape the wood. The organic acid may be acetic or formic acid added at intervals to reduce the pH from an initial value of 6 to 3.5, after which the veneer is removed, washed, dried, and retreated once or oftener until the desired lignin removal is attained. In the gaseous treatment, the wood may be treated in a chamber with a continuous stream of chlorine dioxide, or a given quantity may be admitted and periodically replaced. The chlorine dioxide gas may be diluted with carbon dioxide or may act on the wood in the presence of an amine or pyridine to neutralize hydrochloric acid evolved. Before the gas treatment, the wood may be soaked in acetic acid. The melamine-formaldehyde resin may be applied as a powder to moistened veneers and allowed to diffuse into the wood, or as an aqueous solution applied to the dried veneers by spraying or dipping.
