Abstract
Limited nicotine reduction in leaf, cut or ground tobacco of normal moisture content is effected by non-pressurized extraction with a hot non-polar solvent so that the tobacco loses not more than 7% of its weight. The solvent may be passed continuously through the tobacco, or successive baths of the solvent may be used, excess solvent then being removed and the tobacco returned to normal moisture content by a stream of moist air. The solvent used may be normal hexane at 62 DEG -65 DEG C., toluene at 50 DEG -60 DEG C. or 80 DEG -85 DEG C., or methylene chloride at 35 DEG -38 DEG C. Quantitative process examples are given.
