Abstract
1284795 Treating tobacco stems. AMF Inc 14 April 1970 [9 May 1969] 17681/70 Heading A2C Tobacco stems, especially stems separated from cut-tobacco, are wet softened by soaking in water to raise their moisture content above 80% and then opened by crushing or rolling, and the open stems are drained and then dried to the same moisture content as that possessed by normal cut tobacco. Preferably the stems are first soaked in water at room temperature and then heated by the injection of steam under pressure to a temperature above 120‹C. The opened stems are drained to a moisture content of 80% before drying, the drainage liquor containing part of the soluble organic and inorganic constituents of the stems. A suitable arrangement of apparatus for carrying out the treatment is described and illustrated.
