1,193,557. Puffing tobacco. RESEARCH CORP. 5 Nov., 1968 [21 Feb., 1968], No. 52299/68. Heading A2C. The specific volume of tobacco is increased by swelling the tobacco with moisture before, during or after curing to a condition of high turgidity, and then freeze-drying the swollen tobacco. The moisture-swelling of the tobacco may be effected by conditioning in an atmosphere of nearly 100% humidity or, in the case of uncut leaves, by immersion of the whole leaves or the butts thereof in water. The tobacco may be shredded at any stage in the process, or after processing, but preferably prior to the freeze-drying. The dried product is subsequently reconditioned to a suitable moisture content for storage or for use. The product typically has a specific volume of at least twice that of air dried tobacco of the same moisture content.
