Abstract
1,233,878. Treating tobacco. RESEARCH CORP. 18 March, 1970 [18 March, 1969], No. 12936/70. Heading A2C. The polyphenol content of tobacco is reduced by a process that comprises rapidly heating tobacco in the yellowed state to a temperature, e.g. between 140 and 180F., sufficient to initiate oxidative browning of the tobacco and oxidation of polyphenols contained therein, and then reducing the temperature, e.g. to between 70 and 110F., and holding at the lower temperature until a major portion of the polyphenol content has been enzymatically oxidized. The yellowing is carried out at controlled temperature and humidity, followed by turgor conditioning, before the heating which may be effected by hot air, infra red radiation, or an apparatus in which the tobacco is conveyed through a hot water bath, followed by passage over an air duct for rapid cooling. After the holding period at the lower temperature the tobacco is dried, e.g. by hot air or freezedrying and then reconditioned with humidified air. Shredding may be effected at any stage between the yellowing and reconditioning, but preferably at an early stage.
