Abstract

A graphite article of increased strength and oxidation resistance is produced by impregnation with colloidal silica and phosphoric acid. The article may be first impregnated with an aqueous colloidal silica solution and dried, and then treated with an aqueous phosphoric acid solution and dried, the molar ratio of silica introduced to phosphoric acid introduced preferably being 1 to 0.2-3.7. Alternatively the article may be treated with a single aqueous solution containing colloidal silica and phosphoric acid in a molar ratio of 1 to 0.7-15 and at a pH of less than 6. In the example graphite blocks having a permeability of 70 millidarcys and a flexural strength of 2800 p.s.i. are impregnated with a 30 per cent colloidal silica solution at a pressure of 10 mm. of mercury, 4.8-6.6 per cent of silica being absorbed. The blocks are then dried at 100-150 DEG C. for 16-24 hours. The blocks are then impregnated at atmospheric pressure with 30 per cent phosphoric acid solution, 1-6 per cent of phosphoric acid being absorbed. The blocks are then heated at 150 DEG C. until dry. Two tables specifying oxidation loss and flexural strength, respectively, are given.
