Abstract

Rod-like single crystals of iron are produced by treating iron in a reducing atmosphere in the presence of ammonium chloride to a temperature between 600 DEG C. and 800 DEG C. Iron hydroxide may be precipitated from a solution of ferric chloride by ammonium hydroxide, the supernatent liquid removed, the unwashed cake dried while retaining the ammonium chloride formed by the reaction, and the dry cake heated in an atmosphere of hydrogen. Elongated crystals 10 inches long and 0.001 inch in section are stated to be formed. Iron powder mixed with moistened ammonium chloride may be heated in hydrogen to produce crystals.
