Abstract
Carbonaceous or carbon coated articles, e.g. of graphite, are coated with silicon nitride by treating the article, e.g. by dipping or spraying, with an aqueous slurry or suspension of a mixture of finely divided silicon, e.g. capable of passing 0.104 mms. mesh openings, and a metallic oxide capable of being reduced by the silicon, e.g. 0.5-10 per cent of alumina. The treated article, which may be dried, is thereafter heated between 1000 DEG and 1600 DEG C. in a nitrogenous atmosphere. The mixture may contain a water soluble binding agent such as glucose. Alternatively the articles may be coated by placing the article in a closed vessel filled with nitrogen containing a mixture of powdered silicon, e.g. of mesh size 0.833-0.147 mms. and 0.5 to 25 per cent of alumina and heating between 1000 DEG and 1600 DEG C. to volatilize the silicon and form the coating.
