Abstract
A metal base is coated with a corrosion resistant layer containing a Ni-Si eutectic alloy containing 12% Si by weight by a process of sintering, flame spraying or impregnation. The process is applied to a Ni base alloy containing 18 - 21% Cr, 5% Fe, 2% co, 1.8 - 2% Ti and 0.1% C which is degassed at 900 DEG C. in vacuo, cleaned and then coated either with a mixture of Ni and Si powders or the prealloyed powder as a suspension in xylene and finally sintered in vacuo at 1150 DEG C. The coating may also be applied by flame spraying and sintering in an inert atmosphere or a nickel coating can be applied which is then impregnated with silicon. If the base metal contains chromium the coating should be free of chromium and if necessary the surface of the base metal may be depleted of chromium prior to the coating operation by heating it in air and removing the oxide or a layer of nickel may be applied before the coating of the Ni - Si eutectic alloy. When coating chromium free bases the Ni - Si alloy may also contain chromium. The coated article is isothermally heat treated at 900 - 1000 DEG C. and then aged at 700 DEG C. According to the Provisional Specification the Ni - Si coating alloy may also contain Be and/or Mg in addition to Cr.
