Abstract

The inner surface of an indirectly-heated cathode is provided with a black layer obtained by the reaction of finely-divided aluminium with the metal of the cathode, which may be Ni, Mo, Fe or alloys thereof. The cathode may be coated with a suspension of 20 gms. of aluminium powder in a 140 mls. solution of 2,5 gms. of nitrocellulose in 75 gms. of ethyleneglycol and 22,5 gms. of butanol, or in a methylmethacrylate solution, e.g. by sucking into a tubular cathode, or by spraying or atomizing. For a nickel cathode, 5-15 gms. of nickel oxide may be added to the suspension. The coated cathode is sintered in vacuo or in a neutral or reducing atmosphere at 610-650 DEG C. for 15-30 minutes to form the black layer. Afterwards, part of the aluminium may be oxidized by sintering in a humid, reducing atmosphere at 550-600 DEG C. for 30 minutes.
