Abstract

652,742. Thermionic valves. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Dec. 5, 1947, No. 32176. Convention date, Feb. 5. [Class 39 (i)] In a gaseous thermionic valve in which the electrodes are enclosed in a tubular metal shield 20 having an apertured portion 26 extending between the anode 16 and a control electrode 18, the shield has a rough coating of nickel metal particles sintered to its outer surface, to minimize electron emission from the shield by reduction of the operating temperature within the shield. The shield may be negatively biassed relative to the anode. The control electrode 18 comprises an elongated metal ribbon loop providing an aperture 17 aligned with the cathode cylinder 14 and the anode plate 16. Shield plates 19, 21, Fig. 1, close the top and bottom ends of the tubular shield 20. Nickel oxide mixed with a nitrocellulose binder is applied to the shield such as by painting, spraying or dipping. The coated shield is air dried and then placed in a hydrogen furnace for approximately 10 minutes at 1000‹ C., or over a longer period of time at 700‹ C., to reduce the nickel oxide to finely-divided nickel particles.
