Abstract

769,193. Modifying metallic surfaces. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Sept. 12, 1952 [Sept. 21, 1951], No. 22947/52. Class 82(2) [Also in Group XL(a)] Silver alloy electrodes, particularly beryllium-silver and magnesium-silver electrodes, are heated at vacuo to a temperature above the oxidizing temperature range of silver, subjected at such temperature to an oxygen atmosphere containing ozone, and maintained at that temperature during removal of the oxygen atmosphere, the alloying metal thus being oxidized whilst the silver remains unoxidized. Secondary emisive electrode elements 2, 3 which may be electrodes of an electron multiplier amplifier, together with a target electrode 4, are mounted in a glass envelope 1 connected by tube 5 to an exhaust pump 6 through valve 9 and to an oxygen supply 8 through valve 10. A heating oven 11 may be lowered over the envelope. A high tension, high frequency supply source 13 is connected through switch 14 to the electrode 3 and to an additional electrode 12. With valve 9 and switch 14 open, the container 1 is evacuated and heated in oven 11 to 250‹C. or more e.g. 460‹C.: valve 9 is closed and valve 10 opened, oxygen being admitted to say 15 mm. of mercury: switch 14 is closed to maintain a brush discharge: after baking for say one hour, switch 14 is opened, valve 10 closed and valve 9 opened; after exhaustion, the container is allowed to cool.
