930,946. Electric discharge apparatus. CSFCOMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. Jan. 1, 1962 [Dec. 30, 1960], No. 16/62. Class 39 (1). A metallic vacuum-tight envelope 1 for electron discharge devices comprises a metallic recess provided with an exhausting passage 3, the cross-sections of which increase from the inside toward the outside of the envelope, a metallic plug 4 being forced into the passage to establish a vacuum-tight seal therein, the metals of the recess and the plug having substantially the same coefficient of expansion, at least one of these metals being a soft one coated with a thin layer of another metal, and the shape of the plug is such that a gas-tight contact is established between the recess and plug over only a narrow angular strip. The soft metal is preferably copper coated with indium or gold and a protective cover may be placed over the recess and plug after sealing.
