Abstract
577,738. Uniting metal to glass. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and MARSH, W. W. Nov. 27, 1944, No. 23658. [Class 36] A method of sealing a conductor 2 through the exhaust tube 3 of a vitreous envelope, especially applicable to electron discharge devices, comprises locating the conductor (with or without a vitreous bead 4) in the tube ; evacuating the envelope and sealing the tube at a point 5 beyond the conductor (Fig. 1) ; heating the tube to form the seal 6 around the conductor (Fig. 2) ; and then severing the surplus length 7 of the tube to expose the conductor (Fig. 3). The seal 6 may be effected by means of gas jets ; or, by an electrical heating-element 8, Fig. 4, in a support 9 which is shaped at 10 to hold the valve &c.
