Abstract
676,679. Ceramic-metal seals. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 19, 1950 [Dec. 31, 1949], No. 30896/50. Class 36. A lead-in conductor 3 is passed through a ceramic bush 4 having a glass bead 9 sealed around a substantially central portion thereof by fusion, the glass having a smaller coefficient of expansion than the ceramic, a metal sleeve 5 being positioned around the bush 4 so that one end thereof is embedded in the bead 9, the other end being hermetically sealed to the conductor 3. The bead 9 may be sealed directly to the glass envelope of an electronic discharge device, or a second metal sleeve 8 surrounding the bush 4 may have one end embedded in the bead 9, the other end being welded to the rim of an aperture in a metal casing 2. The end of the bush within the casing 2 may be provided with a counterbore 10 to increase the length of the leakage path from the casing to the leadconductor.
