Abstract

706,183. Ceramic metal seals. K. L. G. SPARKING PLUGS, Ltd. Nov. 29, 1951 [Sept., 1, 1950]. No. 21668/50. Drawings to Specification. Class 36 A hermetic seal between a ceramic body and a metal part having similar coefficients of expansion is made by glazing the ceramic body, oxidizing the surface of the metal, at least in the region which is to be sealed, .heating the ceramic body to fuse the glaze, at least in the sealing region, heating the metal part and forcing the oxidized metal surface into contact with the fused glaze. On cooling, a chemical bond is formed between the metal oxide and the glaze to form the seal. The glaze, which may be a transparent leadless fritted glaze, may be vitrified before or during the formation of the seal. The ceramic body may be made from a high alumina ceramic and the metal part may be a nickel-iron alloy.
