714,199. Semi-conductor rectifiers. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 10, 1953, [April 2, 1952.] No. 8393/52. Class 37. In a crystal valve comprising a sealed envelope containing a semi-conductor such as silicon or germanium in point contact with a "cats whisker," the envelope 2, which is cup shaped and of vitreous material, has a conductor i passing through an air tight seal to one electrode, and its open end 3 is a sliding fit over a metal plug 5 which may be adjusted to give the desired point contact and then secured by fusing a low melting point metal in the space between the plug 5 and a metal film on the wall of the envelope. The solder which also forms an effective seal may be melted by induction or by a heating coil 8, and the base 5 is made sufficiently massive to prevent damage by heat to the semi-conducting flake 4.
