Abstract

812,128. Sparking plugs. KL.G. SPARKING PLUGS Ltd. Dec. 28, 1955 [Sept. 28, 1954], No. 28011/54. Class 7(4) A surface discharge ignition plug is produced by heating a semiconductive material which separates two electrodes so that a bond is established between each electrode (or a metal member connected to the electrode) and the semiconductive. Fig 2 shows a surface discharge plug comprising nickel-iron electrodes 11 and 13, the latter consisting of a ferrule which fits into the plug body 17. In assembly, ferrule 13 is located on the tubular ceramic insulator 12, and the space between insulator 12 and each of the electrodes 11 and 13, and the intervening surface on insulator 12, is covered with a thick paste of semiconductive material, for example a suspension in water or alcohol and fired in a non- oxidizing atmosphere such as nitrogen to a temperature below the melting point of the electrodes but above that of the material. On cooling the material is bonded to the electrodes the surfaces of which are grooved to assist bonding. The semiconductor material may consist of a high melting point glass containing iron oxide as described in Specification 724,016 and the electrodes may consist of "Telcoseal" (Registered Trade Mark). Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 740,872 and 745,016.
