Abstract
In an igniter, such as the sparking plug for an internal-combustion petrol engine, having a nose portion with a vitreous semi-conductor surface, the vitreous surface consists, in weight percentages, of copper oxide 25 to 98; chromium oxide 2 to 40; iron oxide 0 to 50, the balance being of compatible constituents. Preferably at least 2% of iron oxide is present together with some alumina. A number of examples of mixtures are given. The surface may be formed by firing a coating or several coatings of the mixture on an insulator, or a compacted body of the mixture may be secured to the insulator by a glass sealing material or a composite structure may be formed with layers between the insulator and the glass body, the layers progressively incorporating more of the material of the insulator, usually alumina, into the glass mixture.
