901,238. Sparking plugs. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. May 10, 1961 [May 16, 1960], No. 16987/61. Class 7(4) A method of making a spark plug ceramic insulator having a semi-conductive surface 21 comprises applying to the surface of the insulator a composition consisting essentially in parts by weight of about 10% to 40% copper and 90% to 60% chromic oxide firing the treated insulator in a non-reducing atmosphere to a temperature of about 2400‹F. to 2500‹F. and maintaining the insulator at the elevated temperature for at least 15 minutes. The insulator may be fired in an oxidising atmosphere and the firing may be carried out for 5 to 12 hours and the elevated temperature may be maintained for between 15 minutes and 3 hours. The insulator surface may be etched with an etching agent before application. The composition may be applied on at least two separate coatings, the coatings being fired separately under substantially the same conditions.
