867,781. Semi-conducting glazes. CENTRAL ELECTRICITY GENERATING BOARD, and SMITH, E. J. D. Jan. 28, 1958 [Jan. 28, 1957], No. 3007/57. Drawings to Specification. Class 56. A semi-conducting glaze composition for ceramic electrical devices e.g. high voltage porcelain insulators, comprises a high temperature base glaze having incorporated therein a substance which provides a substantially single and simple crystalline phase semi-conducting network in the vitreous phase of the glaze when the glaze composition has been fired. Specified are glazes wherein 16-40% of the semi-conducting glaze composition is barium ferrite or barium ferrite plus at least 4% zinc oxide or barium carbonate plus calcined ferric oxide or calcined ferric oxide plus zinc oxide or 20-30% of glaze is magnesium oxide plus ferric oxide. The particle size of the barium ferrite employed is less than 5 microns. The glaze may be applied to a ceramic electrical device by applying to the unfired ceramic a slip consisting of a base glaze composition having incorporated therein a substance to provide the single and simple crystalline network on firing and firing the coated device e.g. at 1200‹-1280‹C.
