Abstract

An electrically-conducting coating for application to ceramic articles comprises a precalcined mixture of tin oxide and antimony pentoxide incorporated in a non-conducting ceramic glaze. The mixed tin and antimony oxides form 25 to 45% by weight of the total glaze composition. The conducting oxide is formed by mixing and calcining 95 to 99 mol.% of tin oxide with 1 to 5 mol. % of antimony pentoxide. A conducting glaze suggested for a porcelain insulator consists of in weight percentages, felspar 20.2; calcium carbonate 12.7; magnesium carbonate 1.5; china clay 9.4; quartz 26.2; conducting oxide 30.0. The glaze is applied to the porcelain by spraying or dipping and heated to 1200-1250 DEG C. to fire the porcelain and vitrify the glaze. If a glaze of lower melting-point is used, but not containing lead, the article is pre-fired. As well as insulators, the coating is useful for floor and wall tiles particularly for operating theatres and places where static electricity charges are likely.
