Abstract
A vitreous enamel comprises by weight 25-90% of a mixture of finely divided tungsten carbide and finely divided tungsten metal and 75-10% glass frit. The material may be applied to a body and fired thereon to form an electrical resistor. The mixture preferably consists of one part W metal per four parts tungsten carbide. The frit may be a borosilicate glass, e.g. of Pb, Bi, Cd, Ca or other alkaline earth metal. The batch ingredients may be e.g. boric acid, flint, and barium carbonate. The frit, carbide, and metal are preferably ball-milled to 1-2 m , mixed together, e.g. by ball-milling in water or an organic medium, e.g. butyl carbitol acetate with or without toluol. The material may be applied to the body by brushing, dipping, spraying or screen stencil application. The body and coating are then fired at 750-1000 DEG C., preferably in an inert atmosphere, e.g. Ar, He, N2 or a mixture of N2 and H2. The body may be e.g. glass, ceramic, porcelain, refractory, barium titanate, or steatite. A frit exemplified consists by weight of 48% BaO, 8% CaO, 23% B2O3 and 21% SiO2.
