Abstract

1410210 Vitrous resistor composition TRW Inc 14 Dec 1972 [17 Dec 1971] 57794/72 Heading C1M [Also in Division H1] A vitreous resistance composition consists essentially of a glass frit, particles of tantalum carbide, and particles containing titanium, which comprise titanium in elemental form and/or suboxides of titanium, both said particles having a melting point higher than the softening point of the glass frit. Preferably the tantalum carbide and titanium particles together constitute 10-75% by weight of the composition, the ratio TaC : Ti being 1-3 : 1 by volume. The tantalum carbide is preferably of average particle size not more than 5 Á. The glass may be a lead, bismuth, cadmium, barium, calcium, magnesium or magnesium-lithium borosilicate glass. The constituents of the resistance composition may be ball milled together with water or diethylene glycol monobutyl ethyl acetate, and fired on to a substrate to form a resistor. The substrate may be of glass, alumina, steatite, porcelain or barium titanate, and the firing may be at 1100-1150‹ C. for 30-60 minutes in an atmosphere of Ar, He or N 2 .
