Abstract
1,210,493. Resistor compositions. JOHNSON, MATTHEY & CO. Ltd. 16 Oct., 1967 [20 Oct., 1966; 6 July, 1967], Nos. 46910/66 and 31117/67. Heading C1M. [Also in Division H1] A resistor composition comprises 91-20% by wt. finely divided glass and 9-80% by wt. of a mixture formed by heating together ruthenium oxide and one or more of the oxides of the metals of Group V of the Periodic Table, any balance being compatible constituents. Preferably the composition consists of 46-65% by wt. of ruthenium oxide-Group V oxide(s) and 54-35% by wt. of glass. Preferably the Group V oxide is niobium pentoxide. The mixture may also include prior to heating 10% by wt. of an oxide or oxides of one or more of the metals of Groups I and II of the Periodic Table. In further examples not less than 50% by wt. of the ruthenium oxide-Group V oxide(s) mixture in excess of 9% by wt. is replaced by silver, an oxide of silver or a mixture of metallic silver and an oxide thereof. The composition is prepared by mixing together the constituents, ball-milling them to a particle size of from 0À01 to 50 Á and mixing them with a binder vehicle consisting of ethyl cellulose dissolved in an alcohol or ester, such as butyl glycol ester so as to form a suspension consisting of 75% by wt. of finely divided material in 25% by weight of binder. This suspension is then screen printed on to a substrate, e.g. mica sheets, to form a coating 0À0004 to 0À0006 inch and the whole passed through a lehr at 600-650‹ C. for 20 minutes to form a resistor having a mean resistivity of from 30 to 80,000 ohms per square per 0À001 inch thickness. Glasses used are lead borosilicate or a zinc borosilicate of the following composition in wt. per cent: Na 2 O 10À0; Al 2 O 3 3À0; ZnO 33À1; ZrO 2 4À0; B 2 O 3 25À2; SiO 2 24À5. The glass used for the resistor composition has a flow point (i.e. that temperature at which viscosity is 10<SP>5</SP> poises) not more than 50‹ C. below maximum temperature at which composition to be fired on to a substrate.
